Russky Bridge
The unique bridge across the Eastern Bosphorus strait connecting Russky Island and Vladivostok mainland is truly amazing engineering construction. It is reckoned among the largest cable-braced bridges in the world, whose 1104-meter long central span has established the record in the world bridge engineering practice.
The question that the city needed a bridge that would link it to the Russky Island was raised back in the early 20th century. Two projects were developed, but neither of them was implemented. The construction of the modern cable-braced bridge in Vladivostok didn't start until the year 2008, when it was made a part of the preparation to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit that will take place on the Russky Island in September, 2012.
The gigantic bridge, which is called the most large-scale and expensive site of the upcoming economic event, has become not only an important Primorsky Krai's transportation system's link, but one of its brightest sights too. Local residents reckon the unique bridge among Vladivostok's main wonders, because now they have an opportunity to reach Russky Isand faster and more comfortably (until now the only way to do so was to use the ferry crossing), as well as to admire truly unique architectural construction that has become Vladivostok's pride and adornment.
Today it is the highest pendant bridge in the world: its main pylons' height is 327 meters, and its stretching wires' - or cable stays' - total length is almost 55 kilometers. The bridge has four traffic lanes.
